Have you ever had a line of customers at the teller counter while a check scanner suddenly prints half an endorsement line and then nothing at all? It’s a stressful moment, and the instinct is usually to call a technician immediately. But most C6602A-related printing issues on check scanners and receipt printers can be diagnosed and fixed in a few minutes without any outside help. This guide walks through the three most common failure patterns, how to tell them apart, and how to buy smarter so you run into these problems less often in the first place.

Faint or Broken Printing: Check Ink Level and Nozzle Clogging First

The first rule of thumb: faint, broken, or partially missing print is almost always caused by low ink or minor nozzle clogging, not a failing logic board or main controller. This is by far the most common issue reported with thermal inkjet cartridges like the C6602A.

It’s a lot like a shower head that hasn’t been cleaned in months. No Printing at All: Check Seating and Chip Contacts Before Assuming the Cartridge Is Dead

The second common scenario: when there’s ink in the cartridge but absolutely nothing prints, the most likely cause is improper seating in the cartridge bay or poor contact between the cartridge chip and the device’s electrical contacts — not a dead cartridge.

Think about swapping the battery in a digital camera. The battery itself might be perfectly fine, but if it isn’t pushed all the way in and the contacts aren’t properly aligned, the camera won’t power on at all, and it’s easy to assume the battery is dead when it isn’t. C6602A cartridges need that same firm, fully-seated click when installed; if it’s even slightly off, the device can’t read the cartridge’s chip and simply won’t attempt to print.

To troubleshoot this, remove the cartridge and gently wipe the chip contact area (usually on the side or bottom of the cartridge) with a dry, lint-free cloth to clear dust or oxidation, then reseat it firmly until you feel or hear it click into place. Most “completely dead” printing issues resolve immediately after this step. If reseating and cleaning the contacts doesn’t help at all, only then should you consider that the cartridge itself, or the printer’s print module, might genuinely be faulty.

Paper Jams Are Rarely a Cartridge Problem — Look at the Feed Path Instead

The third pattern worth knowing: paper jams or feeding issues inside a check scanner are almost never caused by the cartridge itself. Many operators assume that any printing-adjacent malfunction must be linked to the ink cartridge, and end up wasting time swapping cartridges when the real issue lies elsewhere entirely.

It’s similar to a car making an odd engine noise at the same time the tires start pulling to one side — most drivers wouldn’t assume a single failed part caused both symptoms, because those are two completely independent systems. A check scanner’s paper feed mechanism (rollers, sensors) and its print module (cartridge, nozzles) are just as independent. Jams are far more commonly caused by creased or curled checks, or by dust and paper fiber buildup reducing roller friction over time.

The correct troubleshooting order is to first clear dust and debris from the feed path, inspect the rollers for wear or smoothness loss, and confirm the check itself is reasonably flat before testing again — rather than reaching for a new cartridge as the first response. This saves consumable cost and gets you to the actual root cause much faster. A Real Case: Three Service Visits Before Finding the Real Problem

A credit union branch had a Digital Check TS230 that started printing endorsements inconsistently — sometimes faint, sometimes not at all. The teller’s first instinct was a bad cartridge, so staff swapped in two brand-new cartridges in a row, but the problem persisted. A technician’s first service visit diagnosed a “loose print module connection,” cleaned it, and the unit worked again temporarily — until the same problem returned two weeks later.

It took a second visit before the technician discovered tiny paper fiber debris lodged inside the cartridge bay itself, which was causing intermittent contact with the chip regardless of which cartridge was installed.
